Thank you!

The voters have spoken, a majority of Milwaukee County voters have said that they approve this measure, and that they are ready to change the downward spiral of our parks and transit system due to a lack of dedicated funding.

I want to personally thank everyone who voted for this referendum, also a special thank you to everyone who worked hard to help spread the word.

This is not the end of the road however; there is still some work to be done at the state level to make this a reality. As a result, this website will continue to post updates and news regarding the further process. This website will also continue to present transit related reports and research. So please feel free to stop back as time goes on.

Once again, THANK YOU to everyone who believes that our parks and transit deserve better, and that our once great park system of the past, and our transit system that was twice considered Americas best, can once again shine!

In the end, this is not about a transit system or a park system by itself, but about what is best for the Milwaukee region, the very same region that we all call home!

Smile

The progress of the referendum PDF Print E-mail

The following is the sequence of events that this referendum has already, and still must overcome:

1) The Milwaukee County Board Transportation, Public Works and Transit committee must approve this resolution with a majority vote, the resolution will then go to the full County Board.
• The resolution was approved on June 11, 2008.

2) The full Milwaukee County Board must vote on this resolution with a majority vote needed.
• The full County Board approved the substitute resolution. This was voted in favor 12-6 (with one absent) on June 26th, 2008.

3) If approved, Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker will have the option to veto this resolution.
• He vetoed this resolution on July 16, 2008.

4) The Milwaukee County Board will have the opportunity to override the County Executive's veto with a two-thirds vote.
• The Milwaukee County Board achieved this on Thursday, September 4, 2008.

5) An advisory referendum will now appear on the November 4, 2008 election ballot.
• The Milwaukee County voters achieved this on Thursday, November 4, 2008.

6) Based on the outcome of the advisory referendum the County must now receive approval from the Wisconsin State Legislature.

9 Years of Transit Cuts PDF Print E-mail

On the most recent WisTrans flier we include a list of routes that have been eliminated since 2000, and also a list of routes that have been proposed for elimination since 2000 or partially cut back since 2000. It is a list that is surprisingly long.

Click here to see a detailed list of the actual reductions that each route listed faced, including what was proposed and the budget year that it occurred.

Proposed MCTS fare increase in 2009! PDF Print E-mail

The Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker has released his 2009 proposed budget. Once again we are faced with another $0.25 base fare increase (due to the rising cost of fuel). This would put the base fare for MCTS at a record high in the US, our base fare would now be MORE THAN ANY OTHER PEER OR LARGER SYSTEM IN THE US!

In 2001: Cash fares increased from $1.35 to $1.50 • Adult tickets & passes increased from $10.50 to $11.00 • Flyer surcharge increased from $0.25 to $0.30

In 2002: Adult tickets & passes increased from $11.00 to $12.00

In 2004: Cash fares increased from $1.50 to $1.75 • Adult tickets & passes increased from $12.00 to $13.00

In 2006: Adult tickets and passes increased from $13.00 to $14.00 • Flyer surcharge increased from $0.30 to $0.50

In 2007: Adult tickets and passes increased from $14.00 to $16.00

In 2008: Cash fares increased from $1.75 to $2.00 • Flyer surcharge increased from $0.50 to $0.75

In 2009: Cash fares are proposed to increase from $2.00 to $2.25 • Adult tickets and passes are proposed to increase from $16.00 to $16.50

At a time when higher fuel costs should signal us to invest in MORE mass transit so that people can find relief from high fuel prices, we continue to damage out existing transit systems through fare increases and service cuts. While there are no service cuts proposed in this budget, being known as the transit system with the highest fare in the country will do nothing to help promote our regional economy in a good light to new businesses and residents.

Attached is a sheet listing the fares for all peer and larger systems througout the US. It is interesting to note that of the 17 cities listed with fares of $1.60 or higher, the only cities with no form of rail transit (light rail, heavy rail, or commuter rail) are Milwaukee and Orlando.

There are 3 things that you can do to help:

1) Contact Scott Walker and/or your Milwaukee County Supervisor and urge them adopt a 2009 budget with NO FARE INCREASES OR SERVICE CUTS FOR MCTS!
(See the links on the left for contact information)

2) Go vote on November 4th, 2008. Vote YES on the advisory referendum to provide MCTS with a stable source of funding, if this referendum does not pass we could see even worse service cuts and fare increases in the near future!

3) Contact your federal legislatures and tell them that the federal government needs to step up and provide more federal funding to mass transit at a time when America needs it the most! To search for your federal representatives for contact information Click here

Milwaukee's 10+ year transit struggle... PDF Print E-mail

Recently an op-ed piece was published in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, this piece accurately and concisely chronicles what has been a drawn out, ten year plus, tug-of-war with respect to why Milwaukee is one of the last cities without any modern form of transit.

While the issues that will be decided at the polls in November are not directly related to the issues discussed in this article, it is an interesting read none the less.
